Credit Counseling

One of the most striking aspects of modern age people is the fact that they spend more and more money. They buy things that they need and things that they don't need and are never going to use in an attempt to buy probably not only material well being but also psychological happiness. However, everything is getting more and more expensive and people will find themselves in a financial problem due to the many loans they have contracted. At this point, you will probably need some debt advice to help you get out of debt. Some people thought that this situation, the constant need for debt advice, can be exploited in there favor and created the so called debt counseling agencies.

The first debt counseling agencies appeared in the United States of America at the beginning of 1950s. They were created in order to help consumers realize the effects of contracting a credit and also it tried teaching people how to avoid bankruptcy. So, at the very beginning they offered education and counseling regarding credits and debts.

It was at the beginning of the 1990 that due to the enormous development of ways of communication, a new method was introduced. New companies appeared on the financial market which offered debt management programs on the telephone. This was a necessary step as people are lacking more and more time to go to face – to – face meetings and this method was also technologically supported. Although there were some who opposed this rather impersonal method of solution for offering debt advice, in the end they had to admit its efficiency and they started using it as well. Today all companies dealing with credit counseling use both face – to – face meetings with their clients as phone counseling offered by large call centers.

Since 2005, in the United States of America, credit counseling programs have been made compulsory for someone who is filing for bankruptcy. The law states that someone who has filed for bankruptcy has to complete a credit counseling program in the 180 – day period before the actual filing moment. Someone who has been declared bankrupt by law must also go through a debt counseling program after having been declared bankrupt. This program involves financial counseling to avoid similar situations.

Though this type of program has started in the United States of America, Europe has also understood its importance and similar companies have appeared here as well.
